READING Abbey Rotary Club has given support to a local charity to bolster its support for the homeless in Reading.
New Beginnings provides food and support for the homeless from its base in the former Queens Arms pub in Great Knollys Street.
The Rotary Club has now provided the charity with a cheque following a number of recent fundraising events, including the Oracle Duck Race.
The funding will help the charity’s work in distributing food sourced from local supermarkets, who donate food which is approaching its best before date.
This helps the charity to provide food, but funding will also support the provisions of clothing, and services such as a hot shower and services signposting.
Rotary Club President Jim Gillett and Eda Utku presented the cheque to Richard Silcock, manager at New Beginnings.
Mr Gillett said: “It is heartwarming to see what this charity is achieving right in the centre of one of the most prosperous towns in the UK.
“Rotary is delighted to be able to help out in this way thanks entirely to the generous people of Reading.”
