Reading will be hosting its largest South Asian event this weekend as the Reading Mela 2024 comes to Palmer Park.
On offer is a celebration of culture and community on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4 as the community festivals celebrates the rich tapestry of South Asian music, culture and food.
The event will take place in Palmer Park from 12pm-7pm on both days.
The stage will be opened by the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Glenn Dennis on Saturday as the festival presents a series of activities and performances.
Attendees can look forward to a live music extravaganza, featuring an array of performances by local talent and internation artists such as Raghav from Canada, Arminder Bobby and Lucky-E from India, Hunterz, Shin DCS, Veronica, and many more, designed to appeal to all musical tastes.
From the soulful tunes of grassroots musicians and the energetic beats of Bollywood DJ sets to the rhythmic resonance of Punjabi Dhol.
The festival will also highlight the cultural delights that South Asia is renowned for with the dynamic performances of Punjabi bhangra dancers, the ethereal melodies of Indian classical music, and the deeply moving renditions of Qawwali by Chahat Mehmood Ali Qawwal from Pakistan.
The festival grounds will be lined with a variety of stalls, each offering unique treasures and handcrafted delights. Visitors can browse through an eclectic mix of items, finding everything from traditional crafts to contemporary creations.
A wide array of authentic South Asian cuisine will be available from diverse world food stalls, allowing attendees to tantalize their taste buds with flavours from across the world. From spicy street food to delectable desserts, there will be a dish to satisfy every palate.
The Family Fun Zone area will feature free activities and shows, including the mesmerizing acts of an Indian street circus and a variety of fun fair rides.
There will be community reach out by NHS providing free health check ups and creating awareness about plasma donation, Thames Valley Police for community engagement and recruitment. Wokingham Fire Service will be attending the festival with their fire truck.
