READING is set to gain its fourth Aldi supermarket, this time in the Reading Gateway centre close to the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
When opened, it would be under one-and-a-half miles away from a sister branch on the Basingstoke Road.
The Reading Gateway centre is already home to a Premier Inn hotel and a number of restaurants including Nandos, Burger King, Costa Coffee, Beefeater. It also housed Toys R Us branch, but this closed five years ago.
An Aldi spokesperson said the company will take over the building previously occupied by Toys R Us, and it is hoped to open before the festive season.
“Construction for our new Sentinel End store is progressing well as we move towards opening at the end of November this year,” they said. “This will create up to 40 jobs for the community and enable local people to shop and save closer to home.”
Aldi currently has 990 stores across the country, having opened its first UK branch in 1990 in Birmingham.
The other two Reading branches are on Vastern Court, off Vastern Road, and the Bath Road branch, which was its first store in the town.
There is an Aldi in Suttons Business Park in Earley, but this is part of Wokingham borough.
In preparation for opening, Aldi has submitted an application to Reading Borough Council to sell alcohol from 6am to midnight each day. Comments can be made by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk, by Wednesday, September 13.
Submissions are publicly accessible, and would trigger a licensing meeting.
