A UNIVERSITY of Reading climate scientist will give a free lecture explaining global warming, and looking at what the future may hold because of it.

Professor Chris Merchant’s illustrated talk, lasting 45 minutes, helps explain the science behind the extreme weather events of recent years.

During his talk: ‘In our hands: Our climate future’, Chris will look at what is happening now to our weather, what we can expect to see in future decades, and how we can respond, both individually, and in our communities.

Anyone with questions, concerns, or opinions about global warming should find the talk, and the 45 minute Q&A session that follows, thought provoking and inspiring.

It has been described by previous attendees as ‘informative, interesting and motivational’.

The event is hosted by green group members of St John & St Stephen’s church, Reading, who say they are keen to do all they can to mitigate climate change.

Last year St John & St Stephen’s received a gold Eco-Church award and this year is installing an air to air heat pump.

Chris Merchant is Professor of Ocean and Earth Observation at the University of Reading.

His talks have been inspiring churches and organisations in and around Wokingham borough for the past two years.

His most recent lecture to a packed audience in Henley on Thames for Greener Henley’s Great Big Green Week was described by an audience member as ‘a real highlight of the week.’

They went on to say: ‘It was so powerful to have before me a scientist, who deals in facts, who doesn’t overstate things, but who in knowing the risks and the severity of the situation also visibly cares.’

The event will take place at St John & St Stephen’s Church, Orts Road, Reading, on Tuesday, September 9.

The talk will start at 7.30pm, with the Q&A session ending by 9pm.

Parking on the night is available in the St John’s Primary School car park next to the church.

All are welcome.
