Reading has been recognised as one of the world’s most nature-rich places, ranking ninth in a new global Green City Index. The ranking highlights urban centres that successfully combine city living with accessible green space and clean air.
The research, compiled by travel experts at Iglu Cruise, assessed cities based on three factors: overall greenery, public parkland, and air quality. Reading scored 51.7, making it the UK’s greenest city and placing it alongside international destinations including Oslo, Vilnius, and Helsinki.
Green spaces at the heart of Reading
The study noted that 35% of Reading’s area is dedicated to public green space, with a focus on connecting the town centre to its rivers and parks through the “Rivers and Parks” initiative. Central landmarks such as the Abbey Quarter and Forbury Gardens combine historic features with manicured landscapes, offering both residents and visitors a tranquil urban escape.
Outside the town centre, Reading boasts larger green areas including Christchurch Meadows, Caversham Court Gardens, and the 80-acre Prospect Park, popular for walking, cycling, and panoramic views of the town. Palmer Park also offers dedicated cycling circuits, supporting an active lifestyle within the city.
Sustainability and urban planning
Reading’s commitment to sustainability was also highlighted in the research. Supported by the University of Reading’s leading sustainability initiatives, the town has achieved a 57% reduction in carbon emissions, positioning it as a model for nature-focused, low-carbon urban living.
Travel experts praised Reading for offering a seamless blend of urban convenience and natural escapes. Visitors can easily transition from the high-tech business districts to quiet green spaces along the Thames and Kennet rivers, creating a unique combination of city exploration and outdoor relaxation.
Global context
The index, which ranked cities worldwide, saw Oslo in Norway top the list, followed by Vilnius, Helsinki, and Vienna. The research emphasises the growing trend in 2026 for “nature-first” travel, with Google Trends reporting a 9,900% surge in searches for the world’s greenest cities over the past year.
Reading’s inclusion demonstrates the UK town’s growing reputation as a destination for travellers seeking urban life intertwined with nature, while maintaining strong environmental standards.
