A young optical assistant in Reading has celebrated completing his apprenticeship, highlighting the opportunities available through Specsavers’ programme.
Mateen Butt, 21, joined Specsavers Reading as a Customer Service Apprentice in October 2023. By December 2024, he had successfully completed his Level 2 Customer Service qualification and is now a fully qualified Optical Assistant, continuing to develop his career within the store.
Choosing an apprenticeship over university, Mateen said he wanted a hands-on approach to learning while gaining real work experience alongside a recognised qualification.
“Being the hands-on person I am, I felt an apprenticeship was a better option than going to university,” he said. “Specsavers Reading was a great opportunity for me. Every day is a learning experience, and I’ve gained valuable knowledge about the healthcare sector and the importance of eye health. It’s very rewarding when customers leave the store happy and well looked after. I’m really glad I made this choice.”
Retail Director Hashin Hirani said apprenticeships were key to developing future talent.
“Specsavers apprenticeships combine structured learning, hands-on training, and real career progression,” he said. “We offer tailored in-store training delivered by experts, and apprentices gain practical customer-facing skills while building qualifications. Over the last three years at our Reading branch, three candidates have passed with distinction, and five more are on track to complete their qualifications. We are always keen to develop anyone with the right potential and motivation.”
Apprentices at Specsavers Reading gain daily experience greeting customers, booking appointments, advising on products and supporting queries, all under the guidance of trained coaches.
Hirani added: “We are committed to giving the next generation opportunities that are becoming less accessible. Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and over, including mature candidates looking for a stable career. The skills and discipline gained here will benefit individuals throughout their working lives, whether they remain in healthcare or move to another industry.”
Specsavers was the 2025 National Apprenticeship Skills Award winner for the Large Employer category and holds the Princess Royal Training Award from 2024.
