A Reading man has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a woman in Berkshire.
Muhammad Sohail Arshad, aged 37, of Oxford Road, Reading, was sentenced on Thursday, February 13, to seven years and six months following a hearing at Reading Crown Court.
He was also subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Arshad pleaded guilty at a hearing last month to one count of sexual activity with a mentally disordered female by penetration.
The conviction relates to the sexual assault of an elderly woman with dementia, at a care home in Berkshire, for which he was charged on Tuesday, October 8, last year.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Corscadden, who led the investigation, said: “Muhammad Sohail Arshad has rightly been jailed for what can only be described as a truly awful crime.
“Arshad was in a position of trust where he was supposed to be caring for people; he despicably abused this trust and assaulted an elderly woman thinking he would never be caught.
“This case has been extremely difficult for the woman and her family who are traumatised by the abhorrent actions of Arshad.
“I would like to thank them for their support and strength throughout our investigation but I know that even seeing Arshad behind bars will not erase the terrible trauma of what has happened.
“Thames Valley Police takes all reports of sexual offences extremely seriously and we will investigate thoroughly.
“If you or a family member has been sexually abused then please do report it.
“There is further information available on our website on how to report as well as further support and advice.”
