A PERSON in Reading has gone viral after they were dubbed “the best caller LBC has ever had” following a weekend of rioting across the country.
It comes after widespread rioting and unrest linked to the killing of three girls in a knife attack in Southport on Monday, July 29.
The following day, groups of people linked to the political far right gathered, throwing bricks at police officers as well as a local mosque, injuring more than 50 officers.
Since the initial unrest, protests have taken place in London, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, and Northern Ireland, among others, with many across the country devolving into riots.
Much of the violence has been linked to far right protestors as false claims that the perpetrator of the Southport knife attack was a “Muslim immigrant” circulated online.
Unrest has sparked a number of counter-protests and reaction from the public looking to counteract violence and hatred towards immigrants.
Among those railing against the protests was Darren, 55, who called into Shelagh Fogarty’s radio show on LBC on Friday, August 2.
In the seven-minute-long call, Darren explained his outlook on multiculturalism in the UK, explaining that he felt “adjustments” should be made to make immigrants to the UK feel at ease.
He told Shelagh: “I have culture, colour, learning things around the world; I love my country and I love my people– it doesn’t matter what colour or religion you are, you are my people.
“The problems we have are nothing to do with immigration, but the politicians– one in particular– will tell you that it is… it’s absolute nonsense.”
He cited his experience as a parent: “My children were taught how to accept people; how to love… how to be tolerate and be tolerant.”
He also recounted his experiences as a brick-layer, when he encountered racism when attempting to help a friend find a job.
“It breaks my heart to see people scared and villified because they’ve come here to work hard, they’re our people.”
During the call, host Shelagh said she could “listen to [him] for hours.”
The video of Darren’s call has amassed more than 168,000 views on YouTube, and two of LBC’s Instagram posts featuring the call have been liked more than 35,000 times each.
Many of the comments on the videos praised his outlook and his call, including many which are calling for people to be “more like Darren.”
