A READING man has been charged in connection with a road traffic collision which left a man with life-changing injuries.
Jamie Banning, aged 30, of The Maying, Reading, was charged with one count each of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident as the driver of a motor vehicle, and using a motor vehicle on a road or public place without third party insurance on Tuesday, December 12.
It follows an incident which took place shortly before 9pm on Monday, November 20, where officers attempted to stop a white BMW seen running a red light on Berkeley Avenue and speeding on the A33.
On both occasions officers were unable to stop the driver, who made off without officers in pursuit.
Following this, the BMW was involved in a collision with a pedestrian who was crossing Basingstoke Road with an e-bike, near the Lidl store.
The driver got out of the car and fled the scene, leading to a search by police officers, dog units, drones, and the National Police Air Service.
They were unable to locate the driver, and no arrests have been made in relation to the investigation so far.
The pedestrian was left with serious and life-changing injuries and remains in hospital undergoing treatment.
A referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is mandatory when a serious injury follows police contact, but no misconduct was found on behalf of Thames Valley Police
Banning has also been charged with two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker and a further count of possession of a class B drug, namely cannabis, following incidents on Monday, December 11.
Banning was remanded in custody and appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday December 13, and is due to appear at Reading Crown Court on January 15 next year.
