A LIBRARY, not of books, but of things, is expanding its operations in Reading.

Due to its success, Reading Library of Things is opening a second outlet.

Just like an ordinary library, it allows members to borrow items, rather than books, and has all sorts of items to choose from.

It aims to be as accessible as possible, with no fees for borrowing, and instead a charge for late returned items.

From circular saws, to sewing machines, from projectors to paint brushes, and from bike trailers to belt sanders, the lending venture is helping people to carry out repairs and improvements without having to fork out for expensive equipment they might never use again.

The library is at 13a Southview Park, Caversham, Reading, where it is open on Fridays, from 4pm until 7pm.

A second location is opening at Reading Bike Hub, 14-16A King Street, Reading.

This location will stock smaller tools for borrowing, on Wednesday afternoons, also from 4pm until 7pm.

“All this activity means we need more members to cover the costs of running the Library,” say the organisers.

“Please tell your friends about us, and encourage them to sign up.

“And we also need more volunteers to operate the library, so anyone who can help with that will be warmly welcomed.”

The library will be closed over Christmas, so people planning holiday projects are advised to make sure they get their reservations in, and collect their tools, on or before Friday December 19.

The library will not reopen until Friday, January 9, 2026.

Membership costs £25 each year, with discounted memberships for people who need it.

For information, and to join the library, visit: lotreading.myturn.com or search for the group on Facebook.
