Reading FC’s record points total in the English Football League still stands after Championship side Leicester City lost at Millwall on Tuesday night.

Steve Coppell’s side achieved a remarkable points tally on their way to winning the Championship title in the 2005/06 season which saw the club win promotion to the top flight for the first time in its history.

Reading’s record had looked under threat after the Foxes, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, made a blistering start to the Championship campaign under Enzo Maresca.

Despite having a massive lead at the summit, Leicester have faltered in recent weeks with defeats to Bristol City, Middlesbrough, Leeds United and most recently Millwall.

Needing to win all of their remaining matches heading into their trip to the Den last night to have a chance of equalling Reading’s total of 106, any hopes of levelling the record were put to bed as Ryan Longman’s goal earned relegation threatened Millwall all three points.

Leicester are now in danger of missing out on automatic promotion all together with Leeds and Ipswich Town both hot on their heels.

Leicester stay in top spot on 88 points, but Ipswich have the chance to leapfrog them with their game in hand.

Having now lost nine league games with five still left to play, Reading’s 106 record is safe for another year as Coppell’s team had the most incredible of campaigns which saw them lose just twice in 46 matches.
