Reading FC are reportedly interested in signing striker Dwight Gayle this summer but face competition from several Championship clubs.

According to FootballIndsider, the Newcastle United forward is currently being targeted by several Championship clubs including Reading, Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End and Millwall.

Gayle has a prolific scoring record at Championship level having netted 59 goals in 100 games in England’s second division.

Despite being under a transfer embargo which has limited the club to signing free agents and loan players, Paul Ince has managed to bolster his squad in recent weeks.

Fellow Newcastle player Jeff Hendrick joined the Royals on a loan deal, while the Royals added to their striking options by signing Shane Long on a one-year loan deal as the 35-year-old returned to the club after leaving more than a decade ago.

After Newcastle’s big money Saudi takeover last season, Gayle failed to start a game for the club last season but still has two years left to run on his contract on Tyneside.

After a productive spell in the Conference North with Bishop’s Stortford, Gayle impressed in League Two for Dagenham & Redbridge.

He played one season for Peterborough United where he netted 13 times in 29 Championship games.

Gayle then made a Premier League switch to Crystal Palace where he scored 15 times in 64 top flight games for the Eagles.

Gayle joined Newcastle in 2016/17 and helped fire them to Premier League promotion after scoring 23 goals in 32 Championship games.

He managed 11 Premier League goals for Newcastle in four seasons, but replicated his fruitful goalscoring record in the Championship after a loan spell with West Bromwich Albion in 2018/19 where he scored 23 times in 39 Championship appearances.
