Reading FC are interested in a loan move for Newcastle United’s Jeff Hendrick, according to reports.

MailOnline Sport has reported that the Republic of Ireland international is set for a Championship move after being deemed surplus to requirements on Tyneside.

Newly rich Newcastle are looking to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window and Hendrick, who is currently training with the club’s under 23’s, is available for a move.

The Royals are under a transfer embargo for the second consecutive season which will limit them to free transfers and loan signings.

Hendrick started his professional career with Derby County where he went on to make 196 league appearances in six years, totalling 22 league goals.

The midfielder then won a Premier League move with newly promoted Burnley in 2016/17 and went on to become a mainstay in the side.

In four seasons with the Clarets, Hendrick made 122 Premier League appearances and scored nine times.

He turned out 22 times for Newcastle after joining in 2020/21, scoring twice but only managed three appearances and one goal in the 2021/22 season.

A loan move to Queens Park Rangers for the remainder of the 2021/22 season saw Hendrick total 10 Championship games.

The 30-year-old is also a seasoned pro on the international stage having played 74 games for the Republic of Ireland, with two goals to his name.

So far the Royals have added Junior Hoilett and Tom Ince to the squad on new deals, while goalkeeper Joe Lumley has joined on loan from Middlesbrough, while Australian goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis joined on a free transfer.
