Reading FC continued their nightmarish start to the 2025/26 campaign in League One as they suffered their third successive defeat.
The third loss on the bounce leaves Reading at the bottom of the table after three matches as one of just three sides who are yet to collect a point.
Fans hoped that the team may have turned a corner with their impressive Carabao Cup win on Tuesday away to Championship Portsmouth on Tuesday, however they were unable to replicate that performance.
There was a small consolation for Reading as they did manage to score their first league goal of the season having gone more than 260 minutes without finding the net.
THe goal came courtesy of a trademark Lewis Wing strike as the skipper thumped a shot into the top corner from 30 yards out.
But that late goal wasn’t enough to see Reading claw back any points as they went down 2-1 at home to AFC Wimbledon.
Reading’s problems in attack have been well documented throughout the summer with just one recognised striker currently at the club in 20-year-old loanee Mark O’Mahony, while Kelvin Ehibhatiomahn has also been used as a central striker.
Meanwhile, Reading’s attack looks significantly weaker than last season having sold striker Sam Smith to Wrexham last January before they saw top scorer Harvey Knibbs depart this summer to join Championship Charlton Athletic. Young striker Jayden Wareham also decided to reject the offer of a new contract with Reading in favour of joining fellow League One side Exeter City.
With just a few weeks of the window to go, the cries from the fans for the club to sign a striker grow louder.
Reading have been linked with forwards throughout the summer window, including West Brom forward Devante Cole and Ross County’s Ronan Hale.
Despite monitoring both players across the past two months Reading are yet to make a breakthrough to sign either player with pressure now growing on the club to find a suitable forward to add to the squad before the transfer window closes on Monday, September 1st.
