Reading FC manager Leam Richardson says he has received no indication that Manchester City intend to recall defender Finley Burns, following reports the centre-back could be cut short on his loan spell.

Burns has started Reading’s last three League One matches and has become a regular fixture in the team since Derrick William picked up an injury. The 22-year-old has shown impressive form as the Royals moved up to 9th in the League One table with a 1-0 victory over Stockport on Saturday.

A report by the Daily Mail suggested City were considering recalling the centre-back after he had slipped down Reading’s pecking order. However, Richardson dismissed the claims, insisting there has been no contact from the Premier League champions.

“I’ve heard nothing at all, no,” Richardson said.

“Me and Finley spoke as soon as we came in, it’s an important part of what we do.

“We’re not in control of other people’s players, but as you can see, being on the pitch the last couple of games, clean sheet, performances are excellent.

Burns joined Reading on a season-long loan in the summer and has made 18 appearances in all competitions. His involvement was disrupted earlier in the campaign by injury, with the defender not featuring after 18 October and then spending a period on the bench.

He returned to the matchday squad at the end of November against Blackpool and made his first appearance under Richardson as a late substitute in the 3-2 win over Luton Town. Further cameo roles followed against Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United before Burns was handed consecutive starts against Peterborough and Burton.

With Reading shoring up defensively in recent weeks, Richardson’s comments suggest the club are keen to keep hold of the City loanee for the remainder of the season.
