Reading claimed a dramatic home win at the death as Harvey Knibbs netted a 94th minute penalty to see them beat Steve Evans’ Rotherham United side.

The Royals had gone in front through Harvey Knibbs, but were pegged back by Sam Nombe’s penalty early in the second-half.

However, Reading were given a stoppage time penalty which was converted by Knibbs to secure three points.

The draw leaves Reading in 8th spot on 49 points, just one point outside the top six.

Reading were looking to shake off what was a disappointing midweek performance against relegation battling Shrewsbury.

Noel Hunt’s side had taken the lead that evening through Jayden Wareham, but were pegged back in the second-half as Gareth Ainsworth’s team took home a deserved point.

Hunt named an unchanged team from Tuesday as he looked to get the better of Steve Evans’ Rotherham side.

Reading took the lead with 24 minutes gone when Harvey Knibbs was on hand to poach from close range.

Kelvin Ehibhatiomah watched his shot bounce off the post and then Jayden Wareham’s shot was only parried away at the feet of Knibbs and he converted from a few yards out.

The Royals could have doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Lewis Wing’s shot cannoned off the inside of the post.

The Milers thought they had found an equaliser just before the break when Jordan Hugill had had the ball in the net, but it was ruled out for a foul.

A lively end to the first 45 saw Sam Nombe somehow fire over from a few yards out before Reading then felt aggrieved not to have been given a penalty in first-half stoppage time when it appeared that Wareham was dragged down in the box.

The tide turned quickly after the restart when Rotherham were awarded a penalty.

Pereira wasn’t able to come to Reading’s rescue this time around as Nombe ensured the scores were levelled.

Rotherham went close through Powell and then had the ball in the net again moments later, but this time were denied by a contentious offside flag.

January loan signing Billy Bodin was introduced late on as the Royals searched for a winner.

There was late drama to come when the referee pointed to the penalty spot in the 94th minute.

Knibbs took responsibility and scored his second of the game to give Reading three points which takes them closer to the play-off places.

Reading host league leaders Birmingham City next weekend at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
