Reading FC secured all three points at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in their first home fixture of the campaign, thanks to goals from Charlie Savage and Kelvin Ehibatiomhan.
Ruben Selles’ side dominated for large portions of the game and hardly allowed visitors Wigan a chance on goal.
After taking an early lead through Savage, it was almost plain sailing for the Royals as Ehibatiomhan extended the lead in the 56th minute to double his league goal tally and continue the club’s unbeaten start to their League 1 season.
It was the beginning of a potential new era at the club as touted new owners Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair were in attendance and looking around the stadium, much to the delight of fans.
Following the cup defeat to Colchester, Charlie Savage retained his place in the starting line-up, whilst fan favourite Femi Azeez returned to the bench following a spell of injury.
Reading got the game underway shooting towards the ever-present atmosphere of the 1871 and it didn’t take long for the Royals to show they meant business.
Early on, Ehibatiomhan cut in from the left wing and shot, but it flew right towards the keeper who punched the ball away from danger.
However, Reading continued to bombard the Wigan defence as Amadou Mbengue whipped in a curling cross which was taken down well by Ehibatiomhan and squared for Charlie Savage who finished the ball into the bottom corner to open the scoring.
That boost of energy continued for the rest of the half as Wigan barely had a sniff in at possession. Reading nearly added another as a Tyler Bindon header and an Amadou Mbengue shot were both cleared off the line.
There was a rapturous applause with chants of ‘stand up if you love Reading’ blaring out in the 18th minute of action at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, to celebrate the attendance of the apparent new owners.
Wigan did get their first chance late on with Hugill firing away a low driven shot after a ball over the defence, but Pereira got down well to stop the shot.
As half time approached, Ehibatiomhan kept the defenders worrying as he cut passed Sessegnon and curled a shot just over the far top corner.
Referee Josh Smith finally blew the whistle after three minutes of added time and was met with a roar from the crowd as Reading went in one goal ahead.
The visitors started the better in the second half, keeping hold of possession as Silko Thomas saw a dangerous cross fizz into the box but finding none of his teammates.
Reading needed a moment to ignite their second half efforts and found just that in the 56th minute as Ehibatiomhan doubled their lead, tapping home Sam Smith’s initial effort from a move over the top.
Femi Azeez made his much-awaited return, amid transfer rumours over his potential departure, as he replaced Ehibatiomhan who received a standing ovation.
Reading relied on a strong Joel Pereira save as he denied a Jordon James shot which was destined for the top corner, keeping the scoreline at 2-0.
Young starlet Andre Garcia made his way onto the pitch as he replaced Jeriel Dorsett at left back in the 74thminute, another loud cheer from the fans as the two-academy products High-fived.
After a period of no chances, Azeez showed off his pace as he turned his man in the 85th minute, cutting into the box and winning a corner as his cross was cleared out of play by Wigan.
With some late changes, Reading had a final chance on goal with a curled shot by Femi Azeez which flew past the far post, before the final whistle blew securing the win.
