Rams RFC buzzing ahead of top of the table clash with Richmond

LEADING point-scorer Fraser Honey is urging supporters to have Old Bath Road rocking as Rams host Richmond in a top-of-the-table National One this week (7.45pm).

The unbeaten Londoners took over at the summit following Rams’ first defeat of the season at Rotherham Titans last time out, but the two sides are locked on 49 points and 10 wins apiece.

And following two terrific tussles last term, Honey is looking forward to a special occasion.

He began: “I’m absolutely buzzing for it – any rugby player will tell you Friday Night Lights brings out that extra bit, and with the added point it’s the two top teams in the league going at it, it should be a great evening.

“Both teams are bang in form other than our slip-up at Rotherham, but it’s set it up for an almighty clash which I’m sure will live up to the billing.”

Honey slotted two conversions in the 21-14 reverse at Titans to take his personal points tally to 80 for the campaign, and reflecting on the defeat and ahead to Friday, he continued: “It’s the perfect game to try and bounce back.

“Rotherham was disappointing because although the game wasn’t pretty, we felt in it and there were key moments we didn’t take, plus a couple of errors which meant we let it slip.

“I’ve looked at Richmond quite a lot and they’re a well-organised unit. They’ve got a lot of guys who’ve played at higher levels, so we’re under no illusions it’s going to be a tough test, but we’ve got plenty of things to throw at them as well.”

The fly-half’s one previous floodlit match at Old Bath Road saw Rams overcome eventual champions Chinnor last term, a game which featured Honey produce a sublime cross-field kick to set-up Axel Kalling-Smith for a key score.

And with the hosts hoping to break their previous crowd record of 1,284, Honey ended by calling for any rugby fans in the Thames Valley to get behind the Berkshire side.

He reiterated: “You can’t beat a Friday night and hopefully we can produce some more magic moments.

“To everyone, finish work and just get down to Old Bath Road! At this stage of the season there’s been no bigger game, I think the two teams are deservedly one and two, so please be the 16th man as they say.”
