A “fantastic” group of crafters celebrating their first anniversary have been nominated for the Family of the Year award.

Tilehurst Community Crafters was set up by sisters Carole Biles and Diane Davis, said their nominator.

“They make craft items for our local community and anyone who needs help whether food, blankets, card holders or cannula covers,” they added.

“The 30-strong crafters will work their magic and create fantastic contributions to help in mostly really stressful situations.

“Not only this fantastic work but also they have created a group of ladies that have found friendship and loyalty in meeting every Wednesday and Saturday. They truly deserve the recognition for all of their efforts and for all the support they have given to our local community.”

Another nominator said: “I am one of many who have joined the group and have made new friends and enjoy the social aspect greatly twice a week.”

The crafters meet at Tilehurst British Legion and are a mix of ages and abilities with a variety of crafts including knitting, crochet and sewing.

“We make baby coats, hats and blankets for the RBH, fidget muffs for dementia sufferers, bags for chemo patients, hats, gloves etc for the homeless, and trauma teddies for children in scary situations for the fire service, police, ambulance and hospital to distribute.

“Some of our members are housebound but love to craft.

“Carole and Di deliver wool and collect the finished items. They organise lifts for anyone who struggles to attend group.

“They started the group and are friendly and welcoming to all.

“We have young members learning the crafts with help from members of the group.” The crafters have members from all over Reading.

“Carole and Di have worked tirelessly since the group was started. They organise flowers and cards for members who are ill or have milestone birthdays ie 80th, 18th. We all look forward to meeting each week.”

The Family of the Year award is sponsored by De Vere Wokefield Estate and celebrates a Reading family who through showing each other love, support, respect and kindness deserve special recognition, and groups, organisations and neighbourhoods where people get together as a ‘family’.

The crafters have also been nominated for Charity of the Year sponsored by Roc Search and Community Champion, sponsor Reading Football Club.
