Cafe owner Tutu Melaku, praised as a central figure at the heart of Reading’s ‘multi-culture’, has been put forward for Pride of Reading Awards in several categories.
A nominator in the Business in Action category said: “Tutu is the owner and operator of Tutu’s Ethiopian Table café.
“She provides not only great food, drinks and snacks, but a friendly, welcoming environment, bringing together people of all backgrounds and interests.
“Without her café, Palmer Park and the wider community would be be less vibrant and safe.”
The Business in Action Award, sponsored by law firm Boyes Turner, recognises companies, large or small, showing a commitment to working with the community. There are two awards, for firms with under 50 and over 50 employees.
A second nominator said: “Tutu always puts community first and openly invites others to use her space as a creative platform from which they can too express themselves as individuals.
“She looks after all those she connects with and continuously makes time to listen to and share from her own lived experiences.
“She is humble, kind and encouraging, and a central figure at the heart of multi-culture for Reading.”
Mum of two Tutu has been nominated in three other categories. They are Entrepreneur of the Year, sponsored by MacBeth; Charity of the Year, sponsor Roc Search, and the Hospitality Award sponsored by REDA, inspired by and in memory of journalist and Pride of Reading organiser the late Hilary Scott .
The Pride of Reading Awards annual lunch, hosted by Chris Tarrant, will be held in October, where shortlisted nominees, guests and sponsors are invited and winners are celebrated.
