Young Person of the Year, Harry Lawrence, sponsor The Abbey School
A young man “wishing to make the world a better place through science”, contributed to the approval for use of one of the Covid-19 vaccines.
Harry Lawrence left his family home at the age of 18 to pursue an apprenticeship with food and pharmaceutical company RSSL, said his nominator for Young Person of the Year.
“Joining at the height of the pandemic, Harry quickly began to support analytical testing, contributing to the regulatory approval of one of the Covid-19 vaccines,” they said.
“This approval resulted in the production of billions of vaccine doses, helping to decrease the rates of infection, disease and death.
“Unperturbed by Covid’s unsettling atmosphere and the discomfort of being separated from his family, Harry worked across three laboratories and achieved a distinction in his Higher National Certificate, as well as his Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship,” they said.
Harry has continued his education and is now studying towards a BSc in Chemistry.
“Harry achieved an internal promotion in 2022 and has recently taken up a secondment to our Pharma Chroma lab where he will be expanding his knowledge further.
“Wishing to shape the scientists of the future, Harry has taken it upon himself to learn an array of scientific techniques and is now training the next generation of scientists,” said his nominator.
Harry is also a member of RSSL’s Science Outreach Programme which introduces children to the opportunities in STEM careers and took part in creating multiple chemistry themed activities for local schools.
He has been actively involved in the Scouts for more than 15 years.
Promoting the values of integrity and respect, Harry has headed up charity initiatives and been a group leader for numerous international events, said his nominator.
