A school which has received national recognition for its teaching on conservation has been nominated for School of the Year.
Shinfield St Mary’s Junior prides itself on being inclusive and teaching a cutting edge curriculum says its nominator.
“They offer extra-curricular opportunities to all children for no cost to parents, whether that be sport, drama, art or ecology.
“Shinfield is nationally renowned for its efforts in the teaching of sustainability and ecology.”
This year they have planted more than 2,000 trees in a Miyawaki forest (a faster growing method of planting) and been given super tree beacon status for their conservation work, one of only three schools in the UK.
The school has been featured on the Department for Education website as a case study and has worked with the University of Reading to help implement the national roll-out of climate action planning.
It has also been invited to participate in this year’s COP 28 climate change conference in Dubai with one of the UK’s delegation organisations.
