Community of the Year, Christian Community Action, sponsor Hilton Reading
Christian Community Action (CCA) is a charity “that seeks to demonstrate God’s love by providing practical support to alleviate furniture poverty in Reading.”
It has been nominated for the Community of the Year award, sponsored by the Hilton Reading, which highlights a neighbourhood that has encouraged community spirit and by working together has made their area a better place to live and thrive.
The charity supports “our diverse community while also promoting sustainability,” says the nomination.
It works with people of all faiths and none and is part of several partnerships working to offer wraparound support for the people of Reading, they added.
Its most urgent cases are people in crisis in temporary accommodation with no furniture. It offers white goods, cookers and clothes depending on the person’s situation and needs.
One example is a mum from Ukraine with daughters aged eight and one who were sleeping on a concrete floor. CCA found them beds and other essential furniture. “This helped them take a step to rebuilding their lives and independence in a new country,” said the nominator.
CCA has helped numerous people across Reading since 1992 and became a registered charity in 1997.
Last year the charity helped more than 2,000 people and delivered more than 3,000 items of furniture.
