READING has a new music shop specialising in vinyl today, Thursday, September 7, as a store in Caversham opens its doors to customers.

Pop Classics in the Church Street precinct has become only the second dedicated record shop in the town as it welcomed music fans to the branch.

It is the first bricks-and-mortar branch Pop Classics has established after 20 years of online trading.

Vicky was among the customers who came to check out the store on opening morning and said: “I’m a DJ, and it’s quite unique to have something like this outside of the town centre.

“I’m local, so I came down to have a nose, but I bought a lot of my vinyl in the 90s, so it’d be nice to come and add to my collection.”

While Vicky doesn’t use vinyl records for her DJing, she said: “I like having vinyl as a collector’s item, and especially for your favourite bands.

“It is nice to physically have something; I had CDs when I was younger, but vinyl is so nice to have and to look at, and, occasionally.”

Martina Jones, who runs the shop with partner Damian, said on opening day: “With things changing as they have over time, we noticed we were dealing with local customers.

“Sending records out in the post when people could have somewhere to come and browse and see what they’re buying, too.”

As for the reception that the shop has had already, she explained: “We’ve had so much positive feedback, especially on social media, which is fantastic.”

Pop Classics is now open in Caversham’s Church Street on Thursday, September 7, operating between 10am and 5.30pm from Monday-Saturday, and between 11am and 4pm on Sundays.
