THAMES Valley Police has issued a statement warning of so-called ‘distraction’ burglaries which have been reported in Reading.
It comes after, between 3:30pm and 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21, two women knocked on houses on Greyhound Lane and Yeats Lodge, in Thame; Emmer Green, and Tilehurst, in Reading; and Vicarage Road, Oxford.
They offered residents massages to help back, knee and leg pain, specifically to the elderly, disabled and vulnerable individuals.
The two women entered the victim’s houses, with one providing the massage whilst the other searched the house.
Items such as jewellery, cash and a Rolex watch have been stolen from residents.
The women are described as of tanned skin that are in their mid-twenties.
A black Vauxhall Zafira has also been reported as being present at the scenes of the incidents.
The incidents are described as distraction burglaries, which use some kind of diversion to avert attention of residents while theft takes place.
Perpetrators pretend to be someone they are not, so it’s important residents are aware of the common methods they will use to get into property.
TVP has shared advice on how to avoid being affected, including using door viewers such as peep holes or doorbell cameras to see who is at the door, and to use a chain when opening the front door.
Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home and use the phone number advertised in the phone book or online, as the number on their identity card could be fake.
For a utility company, call the customer service department and close the door while you do this.
If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable, Abbie Biddlecombe, said: “We are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly when answering the door to unexpected visitors.
“Distraction burglaries often involve offenders posing as officials or tradespeople to gain access to your home. Always ask for identification and check it with the company before letting someone into your home.
“If you’re unsure, don’t open the door and report any suspicious behaviour to us immediately on 101.
