Reading has been found as the sixth most expensive UK city to grab a pint of Guinness this St Patrick’s Day, according to new research.

The research was carried out by UK Debt Expert, which looked at the cost of a pint of Guinness in hundreds of pubs across the UK to reveal the cheapest and most expensive places for a pint of the Irish stout.

Overall, UK Debt Expert found that the average price of a pint of Guinness this St Patrick’s Day has risen by 5% in pubs and bars across the UK over the last 12 months – from £4.48 to £4.71 today.

But those planning to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Reading should be prepared, as a pint of Guinness costs £5.05 on average in the local pubs – 6% more than the national average.

Unsurprisingly, the most expensive place for a crisp stout in the country is in London, where you can expect to pay £6.42 on average for a pint of Guinness.

This is a huge 52% more expensive than in Bolton – the cheapest UK city for a pint of Guinness. On average, a pint of the Irish stout in Bolton would set you back just £4.17.

Maxine McCreadie, personal finance expert at UK Debt Expert, said: “It’s easy for St Patrick’s Day celebrations, famously centered around eating and drinking, to rack up a big bill, especially as people can quickly get through a number of pints trying to ‘split the G’ across the country.

“It can be easy to dip into your overdraft or pull out a credit card to fund another round, but it’s important to budget properly for social activities and be mindful of how much you’re spending this St Patrick’s Day – especially if you’re celebrating it in one of the more expensive cities.”

“Drinker or not, many are feeling the pinch of the cost of living when socialising, with alcohol-free alternatives costing more than the alcoholic option in some areas. If you’re finding it difficult to get on track financially there is help available to navigate this transition smoothly.”
