A PETITION has been launched with the aim of saving a venue facing closure in Reading.

The Butler, in Chatham Street, has been described as a “vital” part of the town’s live music scene following years of regular gigs and events.

Now a proposed development of 15 apartments directly behind the pub could see the venue closed amid fears of sound levels for prospective residents.

The venue has been part of the town since 1830.

The area behind the pub was designated as a Major Opportunity Area, with developers Hamble Residential lodging plans build a five-storey apartment block.

Reading Borough Council blocked the plans, echoing the owner’s fears that the placement would lead to noise complaints from the new residents.

However Hamble has launched an appeal to the planning inspectorate, which regulars feel could put the venue’s future in jeopardy.

Harry Jones, who started the petition, said: “We cannot stand by and let [The Butler] be closed by yet another instance of an application to build flats next to a long-standing bastion of live music.

“Please help us petition against this ridiculous application and stop this monstrosity being built in possibly the worst place possible.

“Hopefully with enough support we can fight this and help The Butler continue to thrive unaffected by interference as the live music venue it should be.”

They explained further in the petition that: “The Butler is fortunate enough to be owned by someone who is a great supporter of original artists, both local and from out of town–something we need to see more of,

“Big artists you know and love would probably never have got anywhere without a venue willing to help them get a foot in the door; The Butler is that door.”

One supporter, musician Harrison Wright, said: “This venue welcomed me from the very first day I walked in and played a set.

“It has always been a great social hub for musicians and continues to be–this place is very important to a lot of people and has a rich history and cultural legacy.

“To take away its licensing and construct flats would suck even more soul out of this once great town.

“People are not inspired by empty flats, but by the stories and songs of others, meeting together at the end of the working week to let off the weight.”
