A room full of people in Reading took part in the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people taking part in a meditation session.

World Meditation Day was held on Saturday, December 21.

To mark the occasion, celebrants sought to break the record for the largest number of people meditating at the same time.

Dozens of people from Reading took part in the session, which was attended by 8.5 million people in person and online.

The meditation was led by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar from the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA.

Participation in Reading was held from 2pm to 3pm at Reading School in Erleigh Road.

The meditation session broke the Guinness World record for the most viewers of a guided meditation livestream on YouTube.

During the event, participants engaged in ‘The Art of Living’ meditation pioneered by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Gurudev said: “A whole section of our population are suffering from loneliness.

“Meditation helps you to calm down.”

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar taught participants in the ways of The Art of Living during the session, which can be viewed on the Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar YouTube channel.
