READING’S two MPs have taken very different sides on the news that the prime minister, his wife, and the chancellor of the exchequer have been fined for attending an illegal party at Downing Street.

Alok Sharma, who is a government minister, has come out in favour of Boris Johnson staying in office, despite breaking the laws on covid, while his Reading East counterpart, Matt Rodda, is calling for him to resign.

Earlier today, it was announced that Johnson and Rishi Sunak were both to be fined by police for attending a birthday party held at 10 Downing Street in June 2020. It was also attended by Downing Street staff and Mrs Johnson’s decorator.

The value of the fines is not yet known, but the prime minister issued a statement where he said he would stay on.

Both MPs have tweeted their views on the matter.

Mr Sharma, who is Reading West MP, said: “The Prime Minister has offered a heartfelt apology and made changes.

Mr Rodda, on the other hand, felt differently.

“Across Reading, Woodley & Earley, families made huge sacrifices to keep their families, our neighbours & our communities safe.

“While we all followed the rules, the Prime Minister and Chancellor were braking the law and attending parties.

“They should both resign.”
