Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Alice Broad, of our Major Crime Unit, said: “We understand this unexplained death and arrest will be of concern but we do not believe there is any threat to the wider public.

“While we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, the woman’s death is currently unexplained and the suspect remains in our custody.

“While the deceased woman has not been formally identified as we have not spoken to her next of kin yet, we believe she was staying in the area and knew the suspect. Please be considerate that her next of kin are not aware when posting online.

“We are in the early stages of a complex investigation but we are following a number of lines of enquiry to establish the circumstances around the death.”

“Anyone with information should call 101 or contact us via our website, quoting reference number 43250434350.

“Alternatively, provide information anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via its website.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the scene.”
