READING Borough Council has announced that further work on improving roads around the town is set to begin on Monday, August 12.
It comes as the latest phase of major efforts to resurface routes in Reading totalling £8 million in transport investment by the council across five years.
More than 70 major roads are set to be resurfaced over a two-year period, as well as around 100 more residential roads later this year.
Residents and businesses directly affected be given advance notice of the work, along with on-street closure notices and letters posted to nearby residents.
From Monday, August 12, resurfacing works will be undertaken on three major roads: London Road, Upper Redlands Road, and Alexandra Road.
London Road will see overnight closures between 7pm and 1am from Monday-Wednesday, August 12-15.
Upper Redlands Road will see daytime closures between 8am-5pm from Thursday-Monday, August 15-19.
Alexandra Road will also see daytime closures between 8am-5pm from Monday-Wednesday, August 19-21.
From September, a number of roads will see single overnight closures between 7pm-1am, including Church Road on Monday, September 2.
Overnight closures will also apply during works to IDR slip roads to Broad Street Mall on Tuesday, September 3, from Castle Hill on Wednesday, September 4, from Chatham Street on Thursday, September 5, and Friday, September 6.
Ashmere Terrace and Gillette Way will be closed overnight on Monday, September 9, and from Tuesday-Friday, September 10-13, respectively.
It follows continued work to improve the overall condition of roads in the borough, with the council bringing the number of roads classed as being in “good condition” up to 80% compared to 35% in 2019.
Karen Rowland, Lead Councillor for Environmental Services and Community Safety, said: “Our record on road surfacing improvements in recent years has been excellent with a completed £9m investment over three years now followed by the current £8m programme over five years.
We know our roads are so important to residents – as our feedback has confirmed to us. Therefore we’re doing all we can to keep the momentum going to ensure all road users see the benefits of our commitment to providing transport routes that can get you to where you’re going as efficiently as possible.
After this major roads programme we’ll be returning back to work on improving more residential roads, to add to the hundreds we’ve already resurfaced.”
