READING Borough Council has given funding boosts to 10 projects from organisations promoting healthy living.
Groups offering wellness checks, conferences, and workshops aimed at supporting those at greatest risk of experiencing poor health outcomes and inequality in healthcare.
It comes as part of a new partnership programme, ’s Community Health Champions, led by Reading Borough Council and the Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality (ACRE).
Organisations applied for grants of up to £10,000 to help expand existing services or develop new ones, as well as recruitment of a voluntary Community Health Champion from their organisation to work with the project.
Whitley Community Development Association, Thames Valley Positive Support, Green Ways, and Utulivu Women’s Group have all been awarded funding, as have The Jamaica Society and Friends, Caversham Muslim Association, the Indian Community Association, Greater Reading Nepalese Community Association.
Funding is also going to the New Testament Church of God and Reading Islamic Cultural Centre.
John Ashton, Interim Director of Public Health, said: “We were thrilled to receive such a breadth of applications for our Community Health Champion grants.
“The projects outlined by the applicants will support our local communities to live healthier lives and help reduce health inequalities that prevent our most vulnerable residents from accessing the highest quality health and well-being care.
“As part of the grant agreement we have invited recipients to host the Community Wellness Outreach programme which supports NHS health checks in the community.”
