A neighbourhood pub in Reading that has been closed for years is set to reopen under new management.

The Eldon Arms in Eldon Terrace has been closed since September 2022 after the previous operators, Wild Weather Brewery, were ‘unable’ to keep on operating the pub.

The brewery renamed the pub The Weather Station, serving an eclectic range of flavoured beers, stouts and street food.

The Eldon Arms was part of a triplet of pubs in ‘The Village’ area of the town, with the others being The Lyndhurst and The Retreat.

Now, a new company called Nancy and Marvin’s Sip and Spin is due to take the pub over.

According to Companies House, the business is directed by Nancy Magon, a social worker, and Marvin Carpenter, a teacher, and was incorporated on May 6.

Nancy and Marvin’s Sip and Spin have applied to sell food and alcohol and host live music at the pub.

They have applied to sell alcohol on and off the premises from 8am to 11pm each day, and provide late-night refreshment until midnight each night.

The company also want to host live music from 7pm to 10.30pm Monday to Friday and 12pm to 11pm on the weekends, with recorded music being played daily from 10am to 11.30pm.

In order for these activities to take place, Nancy and Marvin require a premises licence from Reading Borough Council.

A statutory consultation into the licensing application is currently live, and you can respond to it by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk.

The consultation will close on Tuesday, July 1.

Wild Weather Brewery was previously based at the Easter Park business estate in Aldermaston near Reading, but moved to Swansea, Wales in 2023 to join up with Copperopolis and the Boss Brewing company.

A post by Wild Weather at the time stated: “The decision will allow Wild Weather to reduce costs during these difficult times, focus investment into a single larger and much improved joint site that will help improve operating efficiencies and enable Wild Weather to secure its short and medium term future, albeit outside its home in Reading.

“We really hope this will just be au revoir and the longer-term plan will be to position itself to rebound back into a new brewing and tap room site in central Reading.”

However, the Wild Weather was liquidated in April 2024, around a year after its move to Swansea.

The brewery’s website is defunct, with its Instagram apparently being hacked by a Vietnamese moisturising company.

Boss Brewing is also an insolvent company, with its Taproom in Swansea closing in 2023, according to an entry on the Campaign for Real Ales website.

Although a report on Wales Online states that both beer brands would be moving to a purpose-built facility in Swansea, it is evident that the move did not go as planned.
