A player from Mansfield Town FC has been jailed just days after he played in a League One match against Reading FC.

Mansfield player Lucas Akins has been sentenced to 14 months in jail after causing the death of a cyclist.

Leeds crown court heard how 33-year-old Adrian Daniel died 10 days after he was hit by Akins in his car in 2022.

Akins most recently started for Mansfield in their League One contest which saw the Royals win 5-1.

Akins had admitted to causing death by careless driving at a previous hearing, while the judge said that he decided that only an immediate sentence was appropriate having considered a suspended prison term.

In a statement, Mansfield Town said: “Mansfield Town Football Club acknowledges today’s decision by Leeds Crown Court concerning Lucas Akins following a tragic road traffic accident in March 2022.
