THE NHS in the South East is calling on women aged 25–64 to book their cervical screening during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (19–25 January 2026) as part of its ‘Love Your Cervix’ campaign.
Cervical cancer causes around 685 deaths in England each year, but thanks to cervical screening and the HPV vaccination programme, eliminating cervical cancer is more achievable than ever before.
NHS screening uses a highly effective test to check for high-risk HPV, which can cause abnormal cells to develop in the cervix.
These abnormal cells can, over time, turn into cancer if left untreated.
The test takes less than 5 minutes, and the whole appointment is usually 10 minutes.
Following last year’s successful campaign, Love Your Cervix continues to encourage women across the South East to prioritise their health.
Dr Daghni Rajasingam, Deputy Medical Director for NHS England in the South East said: “The NHS has pledged to eliminate cervical cancer by 2040, saving thousands of lives every year.
“Together with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, regular cervical screening is the most effective way to protect against cervical cancer and prevents more than 7 in 10 cases.
“Cervical screening saves lives. A few minutes could prevent cancer. If you’ve been invited, please book your appointment.”
This Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, the message is clear: “It’s your cervix, show it you care – book your screening if eligible.
“It’s quick, simple, and could save your life.”
Everyone with a cervix should be offered screening.
Shreya, 29, from East Berkshire, has attended her cervical screenings since being invited at 25. After her latest screening showed borderline changes, she underwent further tests.
“A few minutes of discomfort is worth the peace of mind,” says Shreya. “Cervical cancer runs in my family, so it’s important for me to stay on top of my health. My latest screening led to a biopsy, which thankfully ruled out cancer. I’ll now be screened every three years.
“While I’ve been lucky, the idea that it could’ve been cancer—and I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t get screened—is scary.
“I’d encourage everyone who qualifies to take up the offer. It’s so quick, and your health is worth those few minutes.”
