Rotherham United manager Steve Evans described the referee’s performance as ‘atrocious’ after his side lost to a 94th minute penalty at Reading.
The Royals have now dealt defeat to Evans in all three of his visits to the Select Car Leasing Stadium after Knibbs slotted in the winner deep into stoppage time.
The Millers had two disallowed goals in the match, and despite being given a penalty for their equaliser, the Royals won it late on with a penalty of their own.
Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after the game, Evans was unhappy with the penalty decision.
He said: “I think it’s very soft, his arms are up so he gives the referee an option to give a penalty and it looked like he was going to take an option given one.
“We’re at the wrong end of some atrocious decisions. The standard of referring is getting to the stage where every manager is getting concerned.
“That’s an atrocious performance from the match official.”
The result sees the Royals 9th in the table, just a point off a play-off spot, while Rotherham are in 14th.
Evans continued: “The most amazing decision of all, the guy (Mbengue) heads the ball into his own net and they said one of our players is interfering with him. He’s not within five yards of him.
“For the referee to do that at the end, I feel for the boys.
“It’s unfair when it comes down to the referee. We’ll speak again to the head of referees and they will say ‘yeah, you’re unlucky’. We can’t keep being unlucky, is it just bad officials? The referee didn’t look up with play, he didn’t look like he could get around the pitch.
“I’m not questioning his honesty, I’m questioning his ability to be a referee at League One level.”
