An Irish-themed bar in Reading town centre is back after a bold makeover, promising to serve up good times, great food, and ‘the best seat in town’ for live sport.

O’Neill’s has been a staple in Friar Street for years, becoming known as a spot for drinks, food, live music and TV sports showings.

Now it is back ‘better than ever’, featuring a brighter, new contemporary design after its last freshen up in 2017.

The latest renovation features a sleek new bar, extra TV screens, and refreshed seating spaces for guests.

Outside, it’s been painted green, closely matching McCafferty’s, the other Irish-themed bar in Friar Street, which replaced Wild Lime earlier this year.

Commenting on the new look for O’Neill’s, general manager Alexander Doust, said: “As a cornerstone of Reading’s nightlife, we’re delighted to have given the pub a much-needed refresh and can’t wait to share the exciting changes with our guests.

“We’re looking forward to continuing to deliver the great atmosphere we’re known for.

“Here at O’Neill’s, we take great pride in delivering exceptional table service and outstanding customer care.

“What sets us apart from other venues is our commitment to genuine human interaction.

“When you visit us, you’ll always connect with our staff and not automated systems.”

During the summer, O’Neill’s has the biggest outdoor seating area in Friar Street itself, providing 70 outdoor tables and a further 50 tables across the street in Market Place.

The company must pay Reading Borough Council £350 per year to take up public space, in what is called a pavement cafe licence.

The O’Neill’s brand is owned by Mitchells & Butlers, the largest operators of bars and restaurants in the country.
