Former Reading FC striker Sam Smith has opened up on his exit from the club after he made the switch to join Wrexham in the January transfer window.
The Royals received around £2million from Wrexham as their top striker joined Phil Parkinson’s promotion chasing side.
He said: “Everyone knows how much Reading means to me.
“I progressed from the academy into the first-team and went back and had a successful time. I always gave my all for them.
“But there were off-field issues and they got a bid from Wrexham.
“I was told they needed to sell me to pay some bills.”
Smith joined Reading’s academy in 2014 before making his first-team debut for the club in 2016.
He left in 2021 but rejoined on a free transfer in 2023 after two impressive years at Cambridge United.
Smith netted 26 goals in 59 League One games for the Royals before he departed to join Wrexham last month.
