Former Reading FC goalkeeper Joe Lumley has stated that he is targeting an England call-up having recently made his Premier League debut.

The 29-year-old made his first appearance in the top flight last week for Southampton in a 1-1 draw at Brighton with injuries to first-choice keeper Aaron Ramsdale and another former Royal, Alex McCarthy.

Lumley spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Reading from Middlesbrough as the Royals were relegated from the Championship to League One.

Lumley had mixed fortunes during his season in Berkshire and left the club after his loan spell ended and joined the Saints on a free transfer last summer.

“I want to play for England,” said Lumley.when speaking to the Daily Echo.

“I want to play at the best level there is and I’ll keep training hard to do that for the rest of my career.

“It’s amazing,” said Lumley after making his Saints debut.

“I’ve been working really, really hard for this.

“I’m just so grateful to the gaffer, giving me the opportunity, the staff and grateful to my family and my friends for being a good support system, keeping me going and finally I’ve got a Premier League game under my belt and hopefully more to come.

“It’s a bit of a tough one because I am in the goalie’s union but as I said, with decisions you hope that you get some that go your way but you get on with it.”
