Sam Hutchinson has lauded new Royals boss Ruben Selles but remained coy over Reading’s recent off-field troubles.
Speaking after Reading’s 2-0 pre-season defeat away at Sutton, the defender described his first impressions of the Spaniard and the challenge he faces in the club’s hot seat.
Hutchinson said: “I know he’s only done it for a little bit, but I can already see the way he works. He’s too good for League One.
“He wants to win, he wants to drive people forward. If everyone listens to him and gets on the same page, we can do that. He’s enthusiastic about football, passionate, and you’ll see that in his team.
“He’s got a lot of work to do. He’s got no players, so it’s hard in pre-season. But the level of the gaffer, what I’ve seen so far, what he wants to do can only be good for the boys.”
Reading endured a difficult summer – receiving three separate EFL embargo breaches – which resulted in the hierarchy coming under fire from large sections of the club’s supporters.
When asked if he had had any contact with chairman Dai Yongge, Hutchinson explained: “For me, I just go out and play football. That’s it. I’m not here to get into the politics of anything. I’m here to play football and do my job, that’s what I get paid for.
“It just causes more problems, we’re trying to get on one page and get the club into a better position. I just think my job is to play football.
He admitted that a potential points deduction had been discussed amongst players, but insisted that the best course of action was to concentrate on delivering on the pitch.
“I’ll be honest with you, everyone speaks about everything, but that makes it worse,” he said.
“I’ve been at Sheffield Wednesday, we had the same thing there. You just have to get on with playing football.”
