A CHARITY supporting refugees is among those taking part in the clean-up operations after Reading Festival next month.
Herts For Refugees, which offers help to newly arrived refugees in the UK, is seeking volunteers to help with its salvage operation.
The operation is one of many which sees participants help with salvaging usable camping equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, and other items which attendees leave at the site.
Festival Salvage involves entering the festival site after the event has ended, when volunteers will be briefed regarding which items are to be salvaged–usually tents, sleeping bags and blankets–which go on to be reused.
Volunteers are recommended to bring their own food and drinks, and to dress appropriately for the weather, including bringing hi-vis vests if they have them.
Reading Festival also works with a number of other organisations to clean up after the event, as many festival-goers leave tents at the site, as part of its continued commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
The event has also signed up to the Vision 2025 pledge and is working towards a 50% reduction in event related greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 compared to 2014.
Each tent contains the equivalent of 9,000 straws’ worth of plastic and requires 25kg of CO2 to make.
