Luton Town manager Jack Wilshere has confirmed that former Reading FC defender Tom Holmes is set to depart the club.
Speaking ahead of the Hatters’ upcoming fixtures, Wilshere said: “I think Tom needs to go. Me and the club have been clear about that, we’ve got excellent centre-backs and in my opinion, for Tom to get into that is probably not realistic right now. So yes, we’ll be looking to get him out.”
Holmes, who previously played for Reading, has struggled for regular first-team football at Kenilworth Road this season. The former Royals defender came through Reading’s youth system and made a 133 first-team appearances before moving on in search of greater opportunities.
However, his career hasn’t kicked on since leaving Berkshire as he has struggled for regular game time.
He spent time out on loan in Belgium last season but managed just one appearance for F.C.V. Dender.
He was then shipped out by Luton on loan to League One Rotherham but returned after making just seven appearances.
The 25-year-old’s next destination is yet to be confirmed, but Luton are understood to be open to offers as they look to balance their squad.
