ONE OF Reading’s pubs is gearing up for the return of a celebrated culinary competition.
The Retreat, St John’s Street, is hosting its annual Pickled Onion Contest, where punters compete to be awarded the accolade for the best pickled onion recipe.
Entrants submit their recipes by bringing a jar of their signature recipe pickled onions to the event, where they will be tasted and judged by a panel.
Entries should be made from raw onions or shallots, to which any ingredients may be added, and will be judged on their appearance, colour, taste, and texture.
The annual event has been held at the Retreat since 2004, when it took over the historical competition from The Dove, a pub dating back to at least the 19th Century.
The Dove held the competition for a number of years before it closed in 2004.
Since The Retreat took over the running of the competition, it has seen regular entries from multiple-winner Sally Winslet, and the late Hilary Scott.
Last year pub regular Liz Rebbeck took the top spot in the competition after competing for a number of years.
The annual Pickled Onion Contest takes place at The Retreat, St John’s Street, from 3pm on Sunday, March 10.
Booking is not essential, but preferred, with free entry and spectators welcome.
