READING has once again celebrated its diversity of culture with a family fun day.
The Kenyans in Reading Family Fun Day returned for its 9th event since it was instated in 2014, marking a decade of bringing food and fun to the town.
In 2023, the event attracted around 2,000 visitors, and organiser Ken said it is continuing to grow.
He said following the event: “I’ve lived in this country for more than 20 years, and I’ve seen that there are families with kids who are less privileged.
“We want to give new opportunities and help them to feed their kids.
“I am proud of what I have been given by the UK, the privilege of being able to be part of so many things, and that is what drives me.
“So I have built a team which shares the same values and which will help me build and realise that vision.”
He explained that the event was borne out of wanting to reciprocate after he had been looked after by his community.
“We’ve been organising events to help people meet one another, share their problems, and help them integrate since about 2000.
“In 2013 my mum passed on– and the community really supported me, even as I had to travel back home with my family to give her a proper send-off.
“After that, we attended a christening where I told a friend that I felt indebted to my community and that I wanted to share a meal with them.
“He introduced me to a venue, where we held a summer barbecue– the event has grown from there.”
