We are now around halfway through the school summer holidays, and if you are anything like I was as a parent of young children, by now you may be beginning to wonder how on earth you will manage to keep them amused and entertained for the three weeks that remain.

The good news is that there are so many exciting, free and low-cost activities available across Reading for families, children, and residents of all ages. From library adventures to dinosaur safaris, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Council’s “Reading Loves Reading” campaign is back and bigger than ever. Running until 13 September, all seven of Reading’s libraries are hosting three brilliant reading challenges: the Mini Challenge for under-5s, the Summer Reading Challenge for primary-aged children, and the brand-new Book Bingo Challenge for teens and adults. These challenges are a fantastic way to keep reading skills sharp over the holidays—and they’re completely free to join. Every participant has the chance to win prizes, from LEGO sets to Amazon vouchers. Libraries will also be buzzing with weekly craft sessions.

For those who love the outdoors, our free Dinosaur Safari is a must. Until 31 August, families can hunt for ten dinosaur eggs across Prospect Park and the Cowsey South Reading using QR codes to unlock augmented reality surprises. It’s a fun, active way to explore our green spaces and learn something new.

If you live in the vicinity, why not pay a visit to the new Emmer Green Playground and for thrill-seekers, the South Reading Skatepark is now open, offering a dynamic space for skaters, BMXers, and scooter riders of all levels.

Over at Reading Museum, families can enjoy trails, crafts and digital workshops. Many activities are free or low-cost, and all are designed to inspire curiosity and creativity.
