Former Wokingham MP John Redwood has claimed that imposing a football regulator is a ‘bad idea’.
Redwood was MP in Wokingham from 1987-2024 before he stepped down prior to the general election earlier this year, where the Conservatives lost their seat in Wokingham for the first ever time.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Redwood said: “Imposing a government football regulator is a bad idea. Will all the MP s who have accepted football free tickets have to keep quiet in this important debate?
In the midst of all of Reading FC’s ownership problems, Redwood was contacted by Wokingham Today back in January to see whether he would join fellow local MP’s and councillors in lobbying parliament to try and get the government to intervene regarding football ownership.
Redwood responded stating: “I think it is best to let shareholders and fans sort out their club and to let the FA decide the rules of their competitions which determine larger club behaviour.
“Taxpayers should not be called on to stand behind or bail out clubs.
“Politicians and senior civil servants should not be needed to determine the rules of a game for entertainment.
“I do not think the government can suddenly resolve the difficulties between Reading’s current owner and the fans.”
