Staff and residents at Austen House care home in Lower Earley took a stroll down memory lane as part of World Photography Day last week.
They all took it in turns to spend this worldwide celebration of all things photographic by sharing their most treasured snaps and explaining what they depicted, as well as why they meant so much to them.
“Photography is such an important art form for everyone, it’s so lovely to be able to capture these moments in time,” says the care home’s activities coordinator, Luliana. “ Lots of our residents love taking photos and admiring beautiful photography in books. They love to look back at their favourite photos and reminisce about when and where the photos were taken.
“We have spent many happy hours today looking at photos, talking about what we love about them and how they make us feel. A picture really is worth a thousand words, and photographs play a large part in reminiscence for residents with dementia.”
This session was part of the centre’s ongoing Life Enrichment programme, which aims to keep residents active in body and mind, and offers a daily choice of physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to suit their interests and abilities.
