ORGANISERS of a green energy project in Reading welcomed some special guests last week.
The Reading Community Energy scheme owns and operates 23 solar panel systems around the town, generating enough electricity to power nearly 150 homes every year.
The panels have been installed in venues including Reading Central Library, Just Around the Corner, the Milestone Centre, Lifespring Church, Reading Community Church, St Birinus Church and Acre Road Business Park.
Leaders from energy regulator Ofgem, including CEO Jonathan Brearley, and chair, Mark McAllister, were taken on a tour of their latest installation, at the School of Art building in the University of Reading’s Whiteknights campus.
The visit, on Tuesday, January 29, was an opportunity for the Reading Community Energy team to discuss issues such as regulatory challenges facing the renewal energy sector, and the opportunities that exist.
In a tweet on the social media platform that everyone still calls Twitter, they wrote: “It was a pleasure to host @ofgem yesterday, talk #communityenergy and show off our latest solar install.”
The group has launched a share offer aimed at raising just under £100,000 to launch a new solar installation scheme.
It says it aims to offer a 5% return on investment from year four.
