The English Football League (EFL) are currently ‘assessing actions’ over the outcome of Reading’s abandoned match with Port Vale.

Thousands of Reading fans took to the pitch in the 16th minute of their game with Vale on Saturday to get the match called off.

EFL chief executive Trevor Birch said: “We are assessing what actions will be taken and what is appropriate under the regulations.

“We’ve got huge sympathy with the fans. They’ve obviously in a desperate situation but we do have regulations to apply.

“Hopefully we will try to find a suitable resolution because we want to help.”

With the EFL admitting to their limit of powers, when questioned over whether the government could take any action, Birch continued: “At the moment there is no independent regulator.

“It lies with us under the regulations to deal with it so we can only encourage him and his advisors to sell the club as quickly as possible.

“We’re dealing with UK corporate law, this is a limited company and there is only so much influence we can have in interfering with the due legal process.

“We share the fans’ frustrations in trying to bring this to a conclusion. There is only so much we can intervene given UK corporate law and our regulations. All we can do is try to encourage the owner to sell and divest his ownership if he hasn’t got the desire to fund the club.”

Reading have been no strangers to EFL punishments having been handed points deductions across the previous three seasons.

The Royals have been deducted four points this campaign and have lost a total of 16 points under the ownership of Dai Yongge.
