THE ANNUAL Duck Race in Reading has seen scores of rubber ducks descending on the town centre once again.
Organised by the Rotary Club of Reading Abbey in conjunction with The Oracle and Reading Canoe Club, the event raises money for the Rotary Club’s charity fund.
Members of the public flocked to The Oracle to sponsor a duck before hundreds of ducks took to the water.
RCRA’s Peter Mason said following the event: “We had to stop selling the ducks altogether because of the great response we had.
“People were still queuing for tickets 20 minutes before the race began; it really caught the public’s imagination.
“The Oracle has supported us really very well, including bringing the giant duck, which you really have to be there to see.”
He also gave thanks to the volunteers at the club, as well as Reading Canoe Club.
“We couldn’t have done it without them, especially as they collected all of the ducks afterwards, and of course all of our volunteers and members.
“We raised over £5,000, which will be spread around lots of local charities; we get approached by all sorts of organisations for different sums, so we’re very flexible in who we support.
“We’ll certainly be running it again, but until then we’ll also be fundraising for Children in Need; you’ll be able to find us collecting donations in Reading Station, The Oracle, and a number of local schools.”
